Reading Novel Studies – Wk4 T4

Hello bloggers,

This week the Two Degrees Novel Studies group was reading pages 186-235. We read about Akira who was trapped in a wildfire with her horse Dodger, after separating from her friend and a person? And George and Owen are running from a polar bear, and are hiding in a hunting shack with 1 cracker shell to scare the polar bear left! Natalie is in the middle of a hurricane and is getting separated from some survivors!

Task 1

Our first task was to make an Informative poster about fire retardant. Fire retardant is a substance used to fight fire, but on the next level like fighting a wildfire.  I searched up what it’s ingredients were and typed mostly all the ingredients. The titles or questions included were What is it Made Of? How does it Stop wildfires? and How is it Transported? My DLO was on a Google Slide!

Task 2

For Task 2, we needed to create a poster about an ancient Inuit legend called Nanuq. He was the master of  the Bears, and according to George he was the one chasing them. Our poster wasn’t any boring informative poster, it was a WANTED poster (that’s not an acronym). We needed to write stuff about what he looked like, and who he was according to the Inuits. He was, of course, a really scary guy, as said in the story. I decided to use a paper-like shape for the wanted poster shape. And then wrote stuff.

Task 3

The 3rd task was to research about hurricanes. We had to explain what they were, how they were caused and something about the eye. I did this on my slide after the polar bear WANTED poster thing. I searched up how hurricanes are caused, which is through warm water and thunderstorms. I also added how fast and big they are. There were 2 separate paragraphs, one for the Hurricanes part and one for the Eye.

Reading, Novel Studies-T4 Wk3

Hello bloggers,

This week for Novel studies the TWO DEGREES group needed to read pages 138-185. Then, do our tasks. A small summary of what i’ve read was that George and Owen had escaped the angry polar bear and needed to head back before dark, and found something called permafrost. Akira and Sue are in the middle of a wildfire when they find someone who offers to take them to a hospital in Cooperstown. And Natalie had found some survivors, but the house they were in crashed and now their in a boat or something.

Task 1

Our first task was to make a chapter in Akira’s point of view. At the end of the chapter I read she was in a dilemma, she would either choose to ride on her horse or hop in a truck with Sue and Vicki (the person who offered to help them). So I wrote a chapter or paragraph about that, and wrote a paragraph from her point of view. I did this on a slideshow.

HERE IS MY DLO ON THE SLIDESHOW

Task 2

For task 2, we needed to find out what ‘Permafrost’ was and why George was so surprised of what it was, my DLO was on a google Drawing. Some of the categories I included were What is Permafrost, Where is Permafrost located and How is Permafrost associated with Climate Change. I found out that Permafrost melts in warming climates making it melt or unstable making it fall or break making it hazardous.

Reading Novel studies- T4 Wk2

Hello bloggers this week for reading our group was continuing reading the book by Alan Gratz called Two degrees.

As I explained last time there was a girl in California called Akira, she was trying to escape a wildfire. Then, there was another kid called Owen, who lived in Canada, Churchill, Manitoba and was facing polar bear attacks, one of them attacking his friend George. Last, was Natalie, she lived in Miami, Florida and a huge hurricane called Reuben had hit her house.

Task 1

For our first task we needed to choose one of the characters in our book and create a fact file about them (but only up to the point we’ve read). We needed to add were they were from, what crisis they were facing and then come up with 5 adjectives to describe them. I decided to choose Owen. He lived in Churchill, a small town in Manitoba. In the last bit I read about him, his friend George was attacked by a polar bear, he interfered and saved George so I came up with one word which was bold.

CHECK OUT MY FACT FILE!!!

Task 2

For our 2nd task we needed to go onto a set of slides called Blooms Card’s. It had 16 slides of different subjects, like Evaluation, Application, Knowledge, Comprehension, Synthesis and Analysis. All of these gave you points like 6, 1, 4, 5 and stuff. For my first one I did Evaluation which was worth six points. I needed to write a paragraph or 2 about who the author (Alan Gratz) was specifically writing to. I did this on a Google slide.

The second one I did was Analysis, which was worth 4 points (we needed to get 10 points minimum per week). For that I had to create a Venn Diagram and compare 2 characters. My DLO for this one was a Google Drawing.

T4 Wk 1 – Novel Studies

Hello Bloggers, this week my group were doing novel Studies. My chosen novel was Two Degrees. This was about climate change, like the melting ice, wildfires and hurricanes all caused by climate change. The first person was Akira, she lived in California and she faced a huge wildfires. Then, there was Owen, he lived in Churchill, Monitoba and the crisis there was the melting ice making Polar Bears come inland. Lastly, there was Natalie, she lived in Miami, Florida and the issue there were Hurricanes.

First when we got our books we were assigned a number, mine was number 7. Then, we had to read up to page 24 which was ‘Part 1’ of the book. The other group that was reading ‘Refugee’ had to read to 33.

Create Task

Our Create Task was to look at a few videos about Climate Change and a few links to Canada’s melting ice, California’s wildfires and Miami’s hurricanes. After which we needed to put in all of our facts into a DLO. Mine was a Canva Video. There were 3 slides each of which all of the different subjects (California’s wildfires and Miami’s hurricanes) and added pictures to do with them. I mostly got all of my facts from the news reports on the ‘Turquoise site’ Two Degrees slideshow

Reflection

It was quite hard to find info on the California Bushfires because they were all videos but the other 2 were really useful. The video making was quite fun too, putting all the facts in, and I did in time, I’m looking forward til’ the next lesson

Reading – T4 Wk 1 SHARKS

WALT instructional reading?

Hello bloggers, today I was working on a text called ‘Sharks!’. It was a lot of major facts about sharks and stuff. It was about their teeth, body and fins and eggs and what they do in the wild.

Texts for This Journal

The first text was a website about how sharks and rays help the environment. One of the facts was that tiger sharks help to make oceans more resilient to climate change. Another was about rays and it said ‘Large, deep-diving sharks and rays help phytoplankton (microscopic marine plants) to grow, simply by cruising between ocean depths and the shallows’.

The second text was about shark sighting and why they attack people. This website was information about popular places where sharks are in NZ. It was also a little news report about scientists investigating the rise of great whites in NZ holiday spots.

The video wasn’t available so I couldn’t write about it.

Create Task for this text

The chosen task for this journal was to raise awareness about sharks and ways to avoid them. We also had to research why this is happening, it was because their normally curious about what you are. I decided to do it on a Canva Landscape poster. I also searched up how to avoid a shark.

Reading – Wk 10 T3

WALT relate ideas to own experiences and wider world

Hello bloggers, this week we were learning about the environment. Since I had done Up the Pipe last week I did Protecting the Waterways this week. This was about when storm water goes into the rivers and carries chemicals into the rivers.

Scaffolding, Complementary and Challenge Texts

The Scaffolding Text was a video recorded in Tauranga Harbor about how to do things to protect the rivers and lakes there. The Complementary Text was a video also in Tauranga, that had facts about it, and things they do there. The Challenge Text was a text about the Bay of Plenty and the 10 away that are in it.

Create Task 1

For Create Task 1, we needed to do a flow chart with 6 boxes, so we needed to get six facts from our article or texts. I wrote ‘#3’ after the word ‘Flow Chart’ because it was my 3rd and I didn’t want to get confused with my other flow charts.I got all of my facts from my article. I think this was a bit hard to find the facts 4-6 because there weren’t much facts left after 1-3.

HAVE A LOOK AT MY CREATE TASK 1 PLS!!!!!!!! (Remember to comment for me to improve)

Create Task 2

For Create Task 2 we needed to choose from these 6 options, Evaluate, Examine, Identify, Questioning, Design and Create. I chose Questioning, we were supposed to write 3 questions and answer them in full sentences. I decided to do mine on a Google slide. One of my first questions was, why is stormwater affecting the lakes and flora and fauna?? And I didn’t forget to put in a ‘why’ and a ‘how’ question. Then, I embedded it into this blog post, and added a few pics of lakes, chemicals and a house.

NNS6 Activity 8 – Maths

WALT compare decimal quantities

Hello bloggers, today and a bit of last week, we were working on a slideshow with some Fri. Baking stuff like brownies, and cookies :). We had to first buddy up, my buddy was Liam.

Then, we made a copy of the Slideshow, and I sent it to Liam. After that, we identified the sugar content in the per 100g column.

We then had to compare them in order on a number line using the IWS. We put them on our slideshow after we finished.

The 2nd question was which baking product would you want. I answered that question in full sentences.

Math – Comparing Decimals Activity 7

WALT compare decimal quantities

Hello bloggers,

Today for Math we were comparing decimals.

We first started looking at where decimals are used like thermometers, for measuring temperatures.

Then, we used the IWS (Interactive Whiteboard Software) to compare 3.2 and 2.3. We needed to do this buy using the decimal baseboard used some Numicon Shapes to build both decimals and compare them.

The 2 questions we needed to answer were, which decimal is bigger? and by how much.

We also needed to take a screenshot of our work and put it in a google drawing to show our work. We obviously needed to write the WALT and date.

Maths – NNS6 Activity 5

WALT represent decimal fractions with Numicon Shapes

Hello bloggers, today we were learning about decimal fractions and how we can make them out of Numicon Shapes.

First, we needed to imagine that a Numicon 1 shape was as big as a 100 dot-baseboard. Then, we made a copy of a Practice sheet, so that’s what i’m blogging about.

We had to find out what decimal fraction we were looking at. Take 4.4 for example, that’s 4 and 4 10ths, so we needed to show that on the IWS (Interactive Whiteboard Software).

One section on our Practice sheet was the fraction of the decimal (4.4 = 4 and 4 10th’s), we needed to screenshot the fraction on the IWS and add it to our sheet.
